Amina Warsame: Breaking Barriers as a Female Farmer

For 38-year-old Amina Warsame, life as a single mother of four in Baidoa District had always been a struggle. Limited resources meant that her small plot of land remained underutilized, and most days, she barely managed to provide one meal for her children.

When Amina registered the GU2023 Cash Plus Agriculture Project, she was skeptical about what the program could achieve. But as soon as she received her support package—vegetable seeds, farming tools, hermetic storage bags, and cash assistance—she began to see possibilities she had never imagined.

“The tools allowed me to farm more effectively, and the training gave me the confidence to try new methods,” Amina explained. “The cash was a huge relief because it helped me buy fertilizer and pay for water to irrigate my crops.”

Within months, Amina transformed her small plot into a thriving vegetable garden. Her children no longer went hungry, as her farm provided a steady supply of fresh produce. She even started selling surplus vegetables at the market, earning enough money to buy school uniforms and supplies for her children.

Amina was also selected to training a nutrition champions group, where she shared her experiences with other women and learned more about nutrition and kitchen gardening. “Being part of the nutrition group has been empowering,” she said. “We support each other and exchange ideas that make our lives better.”

Today, Amina is a role model in her community, showing how women can overcome barriers and build resilience with the right support.
