From Crisis to Opportunity: Abdirahman’s Path to Education Through SHF and ADRO’s Support

When disaster strikes, education often becomes one of the first casualties. For many young people in Somalia, the dream of continuing their education is disrupted by crises such as displacement, food insecurity, and economic instability. But for Abdirahman Hassan Hirsi, a university student at UNISO, hope was restored thanks to the life-saving support provided by SHF and ADRO.

Abdirahman’s family was among the 1,000 vulnerable households in Balcad District affected by El Niño-induced flooding. The floods destroyed homes and livelihoods, leaving families struggling to meet their basic needs. Through SHF and ADRO’s Unconditional Cash Transfer Project, Abdirahman’s family received timely financial assistance that helped them navigate this difficult period.

With the monthly cash transfers of USD 70, Abdirahman was able to achieve what many thought impossible during a crisis: paying his university fees.

“I was able to pay my university fees at UNISO with the cash I received,” Abdirahman shares with a smile. “This support has not only helped my family recover but also allowed me to continue my studies. I thank SHF and ADRO for making this possible.”

This success story is a testament to the transformative impact of humanitarian assistance. By empowering families to allocate resources according to their most pressing needs, the project has not only addressed immediate challenges but also supported long-term goals such as education.

Abdirahman’s journey reflects the resilience of young Somalis striving for a brighter future, even amidst adversity. It underscores the critical role that targeted humanitarian interventions play in restoring hope and opportunities for communities affected by crises.
